Overwhelm and Conflicting Advice Part 2

In part 1 we discussed why nutrition is a difficult thing to study, in part 2 we're discussing the primary reason that, even if we were somehow able to correct all the study issues, there will still always be conflicting information when it comes to health and nutrition advice.

And that is because of BIO-INDIVIDUALITY.

As in, YOU are a beautifully complex and dynamic system, my friend.

A unique set of genes, with your own unique microbiome, hormonal balance, and countless other ever-shifting variables.

You are NOT a uniform machine (which unfortunately is how conventional nutrition tends to see the body and has long studied the impacts of food), and of all your beautiful dynamic complexity, the ways in which food (or supplements or other health interventions) impacts you can and WILL differ.

Not feeling less overwhelmed by that?

I know, I know, it can be a frustrating thing to hear. HOW then are we supposed to filter through all the conflicting info to determine what works for us?

Don't worry, I've got more coming on how to master the N=1 self-experimentation process. Stay tuned!

BUT, in the meantime, here's a simple tip that you can put to immediate use:

Place a giant asterisk *, and the words "FOR SOME PEOPLE," after any and all health or nutrition claims.

  1. Dairy is inflammatory * for some people.
  2. Fasting supports health * for some people.
  3. Saturated fat increases heart disease * for some people.

It will help you to reframe what like senseless contradiction and conflict, as what it is: the inevitable variation that comes from adding different variables (food, supplements, bio hacks) to different complex systems (different people's bodies).
